What does it mean to “go green?”
Does it mean you petition Congress to pass carbon tax legislation? Or retro fit your house with triple-insulated windows.
No, not necessarily. Going green might just mean doing some things the way they used to in the old days.
The old days? Well, things are going so fast that the old days are not really so old. You might have a computer in your pocket — a “smart phone” — that will access the internet and connect to sites around the world.
But the handheld calculator — one that just added, subtracted, multiplied and divided — was invented in the 60s. They cost about $150 then, and they were a marvel.
Now, that’s not 10,000 years ago. It just shows the blisteringly fast pace at which things are moving.
So, what’s this got to do with going green?
Well, it’s just this…
Maybe it’s time to step back a bit. We get so used to having machines do things for us. It’s therapeutic to do things for yourself.
When you start to do this your life will look a little simpler, and maybe your head will start to clear out a little.
Get out in the garden
Probably the most therapeutic thing you could do would be to be outdoors more often.
Take a walk and look around a bit. Or work in the yard.
Yard work is very therapeutic. When you look up the word contentment in the dictionary you’ll see a picture of a gardener.
Where to start?
You start with some manual tools. You need a shovel. And a rake. A few hand tools for weeding and stirring up the soil.
You’ll want a sunny area in the corner for your cuttings. Leave them a season or two, maybe turn them over once in a while, and you’ll have some rich compost. Nothing finer.
If you’ve got some grass to mow, think twice about disturbing it with a rackety mower.
Instead, you might want to get yourself an old fashioned reel mower.
You know, they cut quite well and they don’t take any electricity.
They just kind of whirrr and swoosh. Now, that’s going green!
